Agafay vs Sahara: which desert trip from Marrakech?
The short answer
Choose Agafay if you have a day or an evening and want activities close to Marrakech. Choose the Sahara — the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga — if you want classic dunes and can spend at least two to three days getting there and back. This website only covers Agafay Desert experiences.
How to decide
- Short on time (a day or an evening)? Agafay.
- Want sand dunes in the classic sense? The Sahara.
- Want quad biking, a camel ride, a pool or a dinner show as part of one outing? Agafay is built around those.
- Happy to spend several days on the road? The Sahara becomes realistic.

Quick answers
Can I see sand dunes at Agafay?
Agafay is a stony desert of dry plateaus and rolling hills, not sand dunes. For sand dunes you would head to the Sahara, for example Erg Chebbi near Merzouga.
Can I visit the Sahara from Marrakech in one day?
Travel guides advise against it: the drive to Merzouga alone is around nine hours each way. Agafay is the desert that fits into a single day or evening.
Sources for the Sahara figures
Sources differ slightly (about 537 to 560 km and 8 to 10 hours), so treat these as approximate. Two of them are tour-operator blogs. Agafay's distance and terrain are our own description of the area we operate in.
